Love and War and Snow

Today I have a date! Unfortunately it is not the kind of date I would rather have - today I have a date with my ironing board and a mountain to iron!
But as I am wishing away the end of November; so that I can allow myself to get in full festive cheer, I may give in and watch my first Christmas movie of the year. This morning I just had to smile when I read Marta's fantastic little post on diy wreaths that turned into a food/holiday movie discussion. It is so hard to single out one great film, that is a must-see at this time of year but mine absolutely has to be - Santa Claus The Movie! Now ever since this movie was first released, when I was the grand old age of five, it as been my Christmas movie of choice and until a couple of years ago (when my brilliant husband bought me a DVD copy) I had to watch it on a rather worn old VHS - with my brothers Crocodile Dundee taped before it!
This movie has become part of my Christmas traditions and has to be watched at least once every year. I remember being fascinated by the reindeer which were really amazing in their time, but now look rather poor and mechanical in comparison to todays standards. Oh and it has just the best sleeping nook I have ever seen too! (Melanie you really must see it, if you haven't already)! When I was teaching I would always take this film in at the end of term to watch with my class and for a couple of years I had the entire school in to my classroom to watch it with me!
More recently, I stumbled across The Family Stone (shown on a holiday flight in September!) and ever since it has been added to my Christmas movie ritual list. I love the big family atmosphere in this movie and it made me think of the title of the Gilmore Girls episode I have used as the post title today. Although it is a little corny I really like the idea of the large family being brought closer together at this time of year.
And finally, Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without The Snowman. I was even younger when this came out in 1982 but I remember watching it when I was young so many times. It really is a magical film and brings a tear to my eye even now. This is one film that you can rely on coming across when channel hopping during the holidays and you just have to stay put and watch it to the sad end.

I now have to make a decision on what to watch from my ironing board today; so hard to choose!

Do you have a favourite Christmas film - would love to know...

  3. I had that same date yesterday, ironing is brutal, but with some good shows, manageable!! I saw Family Stone with my too be in-laws a few years ago, slightly awkward, but gladly they love me, well I wasn't a crazy person at their house as she was, but oh it is a good one! i can't wait for Four Christmas' to come out this year, you have to add it to your list!!

  4. I decided to kick off the holiday season on Friday night with Love Actually (not so Christmasy that my sister would harass me if she knew I was watching it in November!) and a big bowl of popcorn. It was terrific!

You asked about faves... We always loved Santa Claus The Movie when we were kids. My dad still raves about those reindeer, and how the Santa in that movie is the best Santa ever.

We have a large holiday movie collection in our house. Modern (is that an accurate term now?!) favourites include Christmas Vacation (so silly, but it's a tradition to watch it, and we laugh wildly about the tree busting out the windows in the house! We are a family that LOVES a really BIG tree...), Home Alone (the music is great!), Love Actually (Colin Firth, oh how I love you...) and The Santa Clause.

I love all of those in their own way. But for me, nothing compares to the classics. Every year we work our way through all of these: A Christmas Carol (the Alistair Sim version, bien sur!), White Christmas (Danny Kaye is singing, dancing perfection and Bing singing White Christmas just fills me with the Christmas spirit!), Miracle on 34th Street (the bit where the little Dutch girl sits on his lap gets me every time!) and my all-time favourite film ever, It's a Wonderful Life. I mouth along to every word, and cry my eyes out every time, like it's the first time I've ever watched it. George Bailey, I'll love you till the day I die!

My sister and I like to get together to watch these. Sometimes her hubby brings home a movie projector from school and we watch them on the wall of her living room while we nibble gingerbread men. We always sing along to "Sisters, Sisters, there were never such devoted sisters" (from White Christmas) and take cheesy photos of ourselves.

Ooh, now you've got me wanting to plan a holiday movie night... and soon!!!

  5. I too love Love Actually but I gotta agree with your choice of Santa Claus too.

Big NO to the ironing pile. It gets bigger by the day. Haha.

  6. Ahh I hope the movie makes your ironing pile go down. I will have to watch the movies you mentioned. As already mentioned Love Actually is a favourite.
I'm not sure what else I watch. Anything really that's christmassy. I like Elf too :)

  7. I was just telling Thomas about Santa Clause the Movie, he hasn't seen it!

I love the Muppets Christmas Carol, I watch it at least two times over Christmas every year and I'm trying to bully Thomas into getting Home Alone for me this year :)
