Break of Dawn

( source: Flicker )
So I am sitting here in the corner of my sofa and my laptop clock reads 4:20am - 'is she crazy' I bet you are all thinking! Well am I? My husband has had to get up early today for a work trip and left the house by 4am, after the alarm went off at 3:15! I am just contemplating my second cup of coffee of the day (may not be a good day for caffeine intake today though).
However, as I sat here reading through the morning papers online I came across this article about early risers and I am starting to wonder if perhaps I am a 'lark' who has just lapsed a little. The article investigated research carried out by the University of Alberta in Canada and seemed to prove for the journalist involved at least, that getting up early really is productive.
And I realise this morning, at this exceptionally early hour, that I tend to agree. It has made me realise that on mornings like these, when my husband has to get up early, I get loads done even before 7:30am (my usual rising time). When teaching I had to get up early because I was in my classroom by 7:30am, but since being at home I have taken advantage of the ability to get up later. However, some days I am not dressed until after 9am and before I know the morning has gone.
Maybe rising early is the key, according to the research many well-known women (article cites Anna Wintour and Michelle Obama as examples) swear by a 5am start. I know my best friend, who has two young boys and still teaches, says she gets loads done before 6am each weekday.
So with my brain amazingly more awake than normal, I am off to begin the days work and will be back later to post again.
Would love to know what time you get up in the morning and if you agree that being an early riser really makes you more productive during the day?

  1. Good morning!

If I didn't stay up too late every night, I'd definitely be all for the early morning/getting stuff done. I like to get everything organized the night before so there's no rushing to get everyone out the door by 7:30. Ideally, I'd go to bed at a decent hour, get at least 7 hours sleep, and then get up before everyone else (so nice when I wake up of my own accord, instead of to the screaming of two little boys!), get dressed and sit at the kitchen table, quietly enjoying a cup of tea before the madness begins!

It's always nice when you get to 9 o'clock and you've already accomplished half a dozen things. Really sets you up for feeling like you've had a fab (and productive) day!

Hope your Monday is lovely. Still Sunday night here...

  2. I usually prefer to rise early but my normal time is 7 am. Sometimes a little later. But I do get a lot more done and I feel like I'm accomplishing more when I start early.

Even though I don't begin the day at 5 am...I try to wake up the same time every morning. x

  3. There is something so magical about late evening/early morning. Sometimes I'm my most productive then! Being a mommy to a 17 month usually has me up at all hours. Ah ha

  4. It depends a little bit for me. If I stay up too late blogging usually, I end up getting up at 7:00 am, otherwise I usually rise around 6:30 am. It takes me a couple of hours, messing around on the computer and drinking tea to get myself going though. I work three days a week and don't have to be at work until 10:00 am so I am fortunate to be able to still have my morning free.
