What do you do with your magazines?

Now when I was young I loved this activity and infact one of my first memories of school was cutting up catalogues and magazines and sticking my favourite pictures onto paper. But as I have got older I have found it harder and harder to cut out pictures and articles! Something inside me just screams that it is so very wrong and defaces the wonder that is a home magazine! And as you can probably work out - I do not throw out magazines! When we moved home four years ago I did have a clear out and threw away many years worth of house magazines but thinking of that now makes me want to cry! But I am now building up a huge amount of magazines again and I really must begin to throw some away so I am going to have to convince myself to cut out any features I want to keep and stick them in a book I think. Can I bring myself to do this - I don't know!

Would love to hear your solutions to this. When searching in various places online I discovered that this is a real pastime for many people. Do you cut out things of interest and put them in a file or a scrapbook or box file? Do you have inspiration boards and update these? Would love to know and your ideas just may convince me to PICK UP THE SCISSORS!!! (arghhh)

I am a bit of a magazine hoarder myself. I used to cut them up and make collages. Now I keep them for the articles and recipes that interest me. I have no good way of organizing them at the moment, and it's a struggle to find what I'm looking for. I love the idea of an attractive file folder to hold certain things, like a section for kitchen reno ideas, another for homemade Christmas gifts etc. If I had an office, I'd totally have an idea board, a la Martha Stewart.
ReplyDeleteHave you made any decisions? There's got to be a good way to store the great ideas without keeping all of that paper! (I know what you mean though... it's hard to get rid of things that you might want/need in future... especially lovely glossy mags!)
Cassie, I totally understand you ONE HUNDRED PERCENT. Heehee! I am in the same predicament as you. Magazines are something I collect and keep ever so lovingly (haha i'm serious). I keep them in mint condition and I just love leafing through past issues!
ReplyDeleteAt the same time, I've always wanted an inspiration journal to stick all my favourite spreads and photos I find in my magazines onto a pretty book. That's so I can always flip through my inspiration book whenever I'm in need of, well, inspiration. Like you, it's so hard for me to CUT the pages of my beloved glossies because, well, they're precious! And it's pure torture for me when I see them cut/damaged.
But recently I've decided to just do it. Just pick up the scissors and cut 'em. At first I cringed at every snip, but I kept thinking about my inspiration journal. Haha. So I kept going. After I was done, I looked at my magazines and wanted to cry (even though I'd only cut a few pages from each magazine. I didn't maul them till they were scrap. Too precious). Hahahaha. Sad, but true. However, after a few days of thinking, I realised that I didn't regret it. After all, I'd love to have a book where all my favourite photos can be found, so cutting the glossy pages up for my inspiration journal was worth it.
What I did, though, was to keep the special issues aside and not cut them. Certain magazines such as anniversary issues and special covers, etc. weren't cut because I didn't want to damage them, as they were special issues and wanted to keep them in good condition for future reading and keepsake sentiments.
So yes. That's my very long story. Haha. Sorry for rambling on and on! ;) Hope this has helped in a way. Do let me know what you decide to do in the end! All the best, love. (: x
Cassie, I struggle with this, too! Especially, since so many of the great decor magazines have folded. I have certain magazines that i will cut for my inspiration files and others that i would never touch because they are inspiration from cover to cover!
ReplyDeletep.s. You have a lovely blog!
great post, cassie!
ReplyDeletei agree--if i don't cut my favorite articles out right away, i completely lose track of them and never open my old mags again. i'm all about the file book!
I don't do any cutting because I know my tastes will change. I'm more of an online saver...I save images from all over the place and put them into folders on my desktop. I just love my magazines too much (my dominoes...I could never cut them up!)
ReplyDeleteI had so many magazines at one point (and still have alot) and I went through the same thing - in the end I kept most of the nicer magazines and cut out the ones that didn't have alot of good stuff in it... that way I kept the ones I really wanted to and I still got to cut things out of other ones
