Frosty Faves

We are yet to have a really great frost here in Suffolk this season and we are often one of the last places in the country to get one. However, more and more beautiful frosty images are making their way into my Tumblr archives so I thought I would resurrect Tumblr Tuesday today to share a few with you.

These images always evoke many years of memories from when I was teaching and each year around the time of the first frosts I would encourage each class I taught to venture outside with me and investigate the way the frost changes nature. I would then bring them inside, display photographs of things we had seen, and get them to paint pictures of leaves or trees and branches. To finish them off and make them truly wintery we would sprinkle the still wet pictures with sugar. The children were always amazed how much like the real thing the sugar made their pictures look and everyone would comment how stunning the finished paintings were.

I don't know about you but I think there is just something magical about the way frost takes hold of leaves, berries and flowers giving them an almost mystical quality.

  1. Oh, I love this post! And the way you exploited frost with your students was fantastic! I'm sure they all get extra happy when they see frost now.

  3. Gorgeous photos! Does this mean we're starting up Tumblr Tuesday again? Because I have got about a million pretty sparkly holiday pictures to post in the weeks ahead!

Love the idea you had about the sugar. I am totally doing that with my first graders!
